Mike Tyson once said “Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth”
I wrote this quote down a couple of weeks ago in reference to something else but it has stuck with me and has been lingering in the back of my head. I believe that as self employed photographers that many of us have the flight syndrome. What I mean by that is that the first time we have a bad year or the first time we have an unhappy client we think about quitting.
What we forget is that in our rush to be famous in this profession that we have to take each year as it's own stepping stone. One bad year doesn’t always lead to two bad years unless you sit on your ass and do nothing about your bad year. Your bad year is the time to recommit to your craft. It is the time to build relationships with people who you have known and you want to know. It is time to really think outside the box in finding new ways to make money.
This is the brilliant part about being punched in the mouth is that you have the opportunity to reset your eyes on a different goal. You have to become self-aware that maybe you aren’t going to be world famous. Maybe, you aren’t going to be (insert major city) famous but maybe you could conquer your neighborhood and become neighborhood famous. Maybe instead of becoming Atlanta famous, you work on becoming College Park famous.
Take the bad business year to work on self-awareness and once you have deployed that self-awareness in your process then you can figure out what’s right for you. Take it day by day, week by week, month by month and eat that elephant one bite at a time. Then get the hell off the mat and Buster Douglass Mike Tyson.
